For many Muslim families in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, finding a qualified Quran teacher nearby is hard. Weekend schools are crowded, schedules are busy, and driving across town twice a week isn't always possible. Online Quran classes solve this: your child learns one-to-one with a qualified teacher, from home, at a time that suits your family.
But not all online classes are the same. This guide will help you choose well.
Are online Quran classes effective for kids?
Yes, when they are done right. One-to-one online classes give your child something a crowded classroom can't: a teacher who listens to every word and corrects mistakes on the spot. Children who are shy in groups often do better online.
What makes online classes work:
- One-to-one attention instead of waiting for a turn
- Consistency, because no travel means fewer missed classes
- Parents can listen in and follow progress
- Flexible times around school and activities
What to look for in an online Quran teacher
1. Real qualifications
Ask where the teacher studied and whether they hold an Ijazah (a certified chain of recitation back to the Prophet ﷺ). Graduates of Al-Azhar University and teachers with Ijazah in Hafs have been carefully tested in both Tajweed and memorization.
2. Experience with children
Teaching a 6-year-old is very different from teaching an adult. A good kids' teacher is patient, uses short activities, praises effort and knows when a child needs a break.
3. Clear English
Your child should understand explanations easily. Ask for a trial class to check the teacher's English and how comfortable your child feels.
4. A structured curriculum
There should be a clear path, for example: Noorani Qaida → reading the Quran with Tajweed → memorizing short surahs → a Hifz plan. Ask how progress is measured and reported.
5. Female teachers when needed
Many families prefer a female teacher for girls and younger children. A good academy should offer both.
How long and how often should classes be?
| Age | Class length | Classes per week |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 | 20 to 30 minutes | 3 to 5 |
| 7 to 12 | 30 to 45 minutes | 3 to 5 |
| 13 and up | 45 to 60 minutes | 2 to 5 |
Short, frequent classes work much better for children than one long weekly lesson. Memory needs regular revision.
Safety and trust
Online learning should feel safe for both parents and children. Check that:
- A parent is present or nearby during class, especially for young children.
- Classes run on a known platform such as Zoom or Google Meet, with links shared only with the parent.
- Classes are not recorded without your permission.
- You can talk to the academy directly about any concern, and change teachers if needed.
Questions to ask before you enroll
- Can we have a free trial class first?
- What are the teacher's qualifications? Do they have Ijazah?
- Is a female teacher available?
- How do you report progress to parents?
- What happens if we miss a class? Can we reschedule?
- What is the refund policy?
- How do you choose class times for our time zone?
How much do online Quran classes cost?
Prices vary widely between academies. Most charge a monthly fee based on how many classes per week and how long each class is. Be careful of very cheap offers with no clear information about the teachers. Qualified, experienced teachers are worth it.
You can see our transparent monthly plans on the pricing page, starting from 2 days a week.
Keeping your child motivated
- Sit with your child for the first few classes, then step back gradually.
- Practice 10 minutes daily between classes.
- Celebrate milestones: the first surah, finishing the Qaida, the first Juz.
- Let them use what they learn: lead the family in prayer with a short surah they've memorized.
- Start with the right surahs. See our list of the best short surahs to memorize first.

Frequently asked questions
What age can a child start online Quran classes?
Most children are ready at 4 or 5 years old for short, playful lessons with a parent nearby.
Does my child need to know Arabic?
No. Children start from the Arabic alphabet with Noorani Qaida. No prior knowledge is needed.
Can siblings share a class?
Some families do this for very young beginners. As children progress, one-to-one classes work better because each child moves at their own pace.
