Noorani Qaida: The Complete Beginner's Guide to Reading the Quran

If you want to read the Quran in Arabic but don't know where to start, Noorani Qaida is the answer for most beginners. It is a small booklet that takes you from the Arabic alphabet to reading real Quranic words with correct pronunciation.

This guide explains what the Qaida is, what you learn in each stage, and how to finish it with confidence.

What is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida (also written Nurani Qaidah) is a beginner's reading primer written by Sheikh Noor Muhammad Haqqani in the Indian subcontinent. It has been used for generations in mosques and Quran schools around the world, from Pakistan to the UK and the US.

Its strength is its order. Each lesson adds one new idea, and all the practice words are taken from the Quran itself. By the end, the student can read any page of the Mushaf slowly but correctly.

Who is it for?

  • Children aged about 4 and up who are starting to read
  • Adults who never learned to read Arabic
  • New Muslims who want to read the Quran in its original language
  • Students who read with mistakes and want to rebuild their reading on solid ground

You do not need to speak Arabic. Noorani Qaida teaches reading and pronunciation, not vocabulary.

What you learn: the main stages

Printed editions differ slightly, but most follow these stages:

1. The Arabic letters

The 29 letters of the alphabet, each with its correct point of articulation (makhraj). This is where students learn the sounds English doesn't have, such as ع, ح, ق and ض.

2. Joined letters

How letters change shape at the start, middle and end of a word.

3. The disjointed letters (Muqatta'at)

Letter combinations that open some surahs, such as الم and حم, which are read letter by letter.

4. Short vowels (Harakat)

Fatha, kasra and damma: the short "a", "i" and "u" sounds.

5. Tanween

Double vowels at the end of words that add an "n" sound.

6. Long vowels (Madd)

Stretching sounds with alif, waw and yaa, and the standing vowels.

7. Sukoon

A letter with no vowel, read joined to the letter before it.

8. Shaddah

A doubled letter, read with emphasis.

9. Combined practice and first Tajweed rules

Exercises that mix everything, plus an introduction to rules like the lengthening of Madd and the nasal sound (ghunnah).

How long does Noorani Qaida take?

StudentClassesTypical time
Child (5 to 8 years)3 to 5 lessons a week6 to 12 months
Teenager3 lessons a week3 to 6 months
Adult2 to 3 lessons a week2 to 4 months

These are averages. Some students finish faster. What matters is that each lesson is mastered before moving on.

How to study Noorani Qaida effectively

  1. Learn with a teacher who listens. Pronunciation cannot be learned from reading alone. A teacher must hear each sound and correct it.
  2. Keep lessons short and frequent. 20 to 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week, works better than one long weekly class.
  3. Read out loud every day. Even 10 minutes of revision between classes makes a big difference.
  4. Don't rush the alphabet. Most reading problems later come from letters that were never pronounced correctly.
  5. Move to the Mushaf gradually. After the Qaida, start reading short surahs from Juz Amma with your teacher.

While your child is learning the Qaida, they can already start memorizing by listening. See our list of the best short surahs to memorize first.

After Noorani Qaida: what's next?

Once a student finishes the Qaida, the usual path is:

  1. Reading the Quran with a teacher, starting from Juz Amma
  2. Studying Tajweed rules in more detail
  3. Memorizing short surahs, then starting a Hifz plan

Frequently asked questions

Is Noorani Qaida enough to read the Quran?
It gives you everything you need to read correctly. Fluency then comes with practice reading the Mushaf with a teacher.

Can I learn Noorani Qaida by myself?
You can learn the letter shapes alone, but correct pronunciation needs a teacher. Small mistakes become habits that are hard to fix.

What's the difference between Noorani Qaida and Tajweed?
Noorani Qaida teaches you to read. Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting beautifully and correctly. The Qaida introduces the basics of Tajweed, and a Tajweed course goes deeper.
