Every Muslim needs a few surahs by heart to pray. Starting with short surahs also builds the confidence and habits you need for larger memorization goals later.
Below are ten short surahs that most teachers start with, roughly in the order they are usually taught. All of them are in Juz Amma, the 30th and last part of the Quran.
Why start with short surahs?
- They are needed for Salah. After Al-Fatiha, you recite another surah or some verses in the first two rak'ahs.
- They are short and rhythmic, which makes them easy for children.
- They carry great virtues described in authentic hadith.
- Finishing a surah gives a quick sense of achievement that keeps beginners going.
1. Surah Al-Fatiha (The Opening) — 7 verses
The most important surah of all, recited in every rak'ah of every prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book" (Bukhari 756). Memorize it first, and make sure your Tajweed in it is correct. Read our full guide to Surah Al-Fatiha's meaning.
2. Surah Al-Ikhlas (Sincerity) — 4 verses
A short statement of the Oneness of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ described it as equal to one third of the Quran (Bukhari 5013).
3. Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) — 5 verses
A prayer for protection from the evil of creation, of darkness, of magic and of envy.
4. Surah An-Nas (Mankind) — 6 verses
A prayer for protection from the whispering of Shaytan. Together with Al-Falaq, these are called Al-Mu'awwidhatayn, the two surahs of seeking refuge. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite them, with Al-Ikhlas, before sleeping.
5. Surah Al-Kawthar (Abundance) — 3 verses
The shortest surah in the Quran. It reminds us of the great gift Allah gave the Prophet ﷺ and calls us to pray and sacrifice for Him alone.
6. Surah Al-Asr (Time) — 3 verses
Three verses that summarize the path to success: faith, good deeds, encouraging truth and encouraging patience. Imam Ash-Shafi'i is reported to have said that if people reflected on this surah alone, it would be enough for them.
7. Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) — 6 verses
A clear declaration of pure worship of Allah. Easy to memorize because of its repeated phrases.
8. Surah An-Nasr (The Help) — 3 verses
Revealed near the end of the Prophet's life ﷺ. It teaches us to respond to success with praise and seeking forgiveness.
9. Surah Al-Masad (The Palm Fiber) — 5 verses
About Abu Lahab, the Prophet's uncle who opposed him. A short, rhythmic surah children enjoy.
10. Surah Quraysh — 4 verses
A reminder to thank Allah for food and safety, two blessings we often take for granted.
After these ten, continue with the rest of Juz Amma, usually moving backwards from the end: Al-Fil, Al-Ma'un, Al-Humazah, At-Takathur, Al-Qari'ah and so on.
Tips for helping children memorize
- Listen first. Play the surah from a clear reciter many times before memorizing. Children absorb sound quickly.
- One verse at a time. Repeat a verse 5 to 10 times, then join it to the one before.
- Same time every day. After Fajr, after school or before bed. A short daily routine beats long weekend sessions.
- Use it straight away. Encourage your child to recite the new surah in their prayers.
- Explain the meaning simply. A short story about the surah helps children remember it and love it.
- Revise old surahs. Spend a few minutes each day reciting surahs they already know.
- Praise effort, not speed. Celebrate every finished surah, with a small reward or a family recitation.
Pronunciation matters from day one
It's much easier to memorize correctly the first time than to fix mistakes later. If your child or you can't read Arabic yet, learn the basics with Noorani Qaida alongside memorizing by listening. When you're ready for more, follow our Quran memorization plan.
