Online Tajweed Course: Recite the Quran Correctly

This online Tajweed course is for anyone who can already read the Quran and now wants to recite it the way it should be recited. You'll learn each Tajweed rule in plain English, see it in real verses, and then use it out loud while your teacher listens. The goal isn't to memorize a list of rules. It's to read a page of the Quran correctly without stopping to think about them.

Tajweed literally means "to make better". In practice it means giving every letter its right: its correct sound, its correct length and its correct quality. Scholars agree that reciting with the basics of Tajweed is required for anyone reading the Quran, because mistakes in letters and vowels can change the meaning of a word.

Who should take this course

  • Students who can read Arabic script but aren't sure their pronunciation is right.
  • Kids who finished Noorani Qaida or Noor Al-Bayan and are ready to read the Quran properly.
  • Adults who learned to read informally and want to fix old habits.
  • Students preparing for Hifz or Ijazah, where strong Tajweed is expected.

If you can't read yet, start with our Quran reading course or the Noorani Qaida course first.

Course levels

Level 1: Makharij and sifat

Where each letter comes from (throat, tongue, lips, nose) and the qualities that make it sound the way it does. This is where most errors are fixed, especially heavy and light letters, and letters that English speakers tend to mix up.

Level 2: Noon and meem rules

Izhar, idgham, iqlab and ikhfa for noon sakinah and tanween, then the rules of meem sakinah and the ghunnah. These rules come up on almost every line of the Quran.

Level 3: Madd and its types

The natural madd and the longer madds, how many counts each one takes, and how to keep your lengths consistent across a whole page.

Level 4: Applied recitation

Qalqalah, tafkheem and tarqeeq, the rules of ra and lam, stopping and starting (waqf and ibtida). Most of this level is spent reciting full pages while the teacher corrects in real time.

Each level ends with a recitation test and a certificate.

Theory, then practice, in every class

Every class mixes the two. The teacher explains one rule for a few minutes, gives examples from the Quran, and then you read a passage where that rule appears. Rules you've already learned keep coming back in your reading, so they don't fade.

You can choose 30, 45 or 60 minute classes. For adults, 45 minutes is a good balance between learning a new rule and practising it.

How long does it take to learn Tajweed?

With three classes a week, students usually complete the four levels in about eight months. The basic rules, enough to recite correctly in prayer, are often in place after the first two levels. Real fluency comes from reciting regularly, so the teacher gives you a short passage to practise each week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I learn Tajweed online, or do I need a teacher in person? You can learn it online very well, as long as the class is live and one-on-one. The important thing is that a qualified teacher hears you and corrects you. Recorded videos alone can't do that.

Do I need to know Arabic to learn Tajweed? No. You need to be able to read the Arabic letters. The rules are explained in English.

Which narration do you teach? We teach Hafs 'an 'Asim, the most widely used narration. Other narrations are taught in our Ten Qira'at course.

Is this course suitable for kids? Yes. For children we keep the theory light and focus on listening and repeating, with simple names for each rule.

Will I get a certificate? Yes, one for each level you complete.
